Iit Kanpur

IIT Kanpur was established by an Act of Parliament in 1959. The institute was started in December 1959 in a room in the Canteen Building of the Harcourt Butler Technological Institute at Agricultural Gardens in Kanpur. In 1963, the Institute moved to its present location, on the historic Grand Trunk Road near the village of Kalyanpur in Kanpur district. During the first ten years of its existence, IIT Kanpur benefited from the Kanpur Indo-American Programme, where a consortium of 9 US universities namely M.I.T, University of California, Berkeley, California Institute of Technology, Princeton University, Carnegie Institute of Technology, University of Michigan, Ohio State University, Case Institute Of Technology and Purdue University helped set up the research laboratories and academic programmes.[1] The first Director of the Institute was Dr. P. K. Kelkar (after whom the Central Library was renamed in 2002). Under the guidance of eminent economist John Kenneth Galbraith, IIT Kanpur was the first institute in India to start Computer Science education. The earliest computer courses were started at IIT Kanpur in August 1963 on an IBM 1620 system, a novelty then even in many North American and European universities. In 1971, the institute initiated an independent academic program, leading to M.Tech. and Ph.D. degrees.

IIT Kanpur Application Requirements

Students who wish to apply for the M.Tech programs offered by IIT Kanpur should have a minimum of 55% in the qualifying examination. A bachelors degree in B.Tech / B.E / B.Sc (Engg)/ M.Sc in respective or allied area is required. The prospective candidates should also have a valid Gate/ UGC / CSIR score in computer science or information technology. B.Tech Graduates from other IITs who have scored an overall CGPA of 6.5 and a CGPA of 8.0 during the last two semesters in B.Tech can also apply without sitting for the GATE test.

For students who wish to apply for the Ph.D in Engineering need to have a M.Tech / M.E /M.Sc (Engg) degree in the Engineering / Technology. Master's degree holders in Sciences having an exceptional academic record and also possessing a valid GATE score may also apply. MBBS, B.Pharma or M.Pharma Degree holders may apply for Ph.D in BSBE.
For M.Des students having a bachelor's degree in engineering, design or architecture with a valid GATE / CEED score may apply. Those who wish to apply for Ph.D in Science and HSS should have a M.Sc / M.A degree in respective or allied area with a valid GATE / UGC / CSIR score.
